Differential lubricant change
1. This procedure should be performed after the vehicle has been driven, so the lubricant will be warm and therefore will flow out of the differential more easily.
2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. You’ll be draining the lubricant by removing the drain plug, so move a drain pan, rags, newspapers and wrenches under the vehicle.
3. Remove the filler plug and the drain plug and allow the lubricant to drain into the pan, then clean and reinstall the drain plug (See Differential lubricant level check). Note: On differentials not equipped with a drain plug, the differential cover must be removed to drain the lubricant (see Driveline).
4. Use a hand pump, syringe or squeeze bottle to fill the differential housing with the specified lubricant until it’s at the level specified in Differential lubricant level check. Reinstall the drain plug.
5. The old lubricant cannot be reused in its present state and should be disposed of. Check with your local auto parts store, disposal facility or environmental agency to see if they will accept the lubricant for recycling. After the lubricant has cooled it can be drained into a container (capped plastic jugs, topped bottles, milk cartons, etc.) for transport to one of these disposal sites. Don’t dispose of the lubricant by pouring it on the ground or down a drain!
