Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor — replacement

Note: The CMP sensor is located on the engine front cover, at the 1 o’clock position in relation to the crankshaft pulley.

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Engine electrical systems).

2. If you’re working on a V6 or 5.3L16.2L V8, remove the drivebelt tensioner (see Drivebelt check and replacement).

3. If you’re working on a 6.0L V8 equipped with a camshaft position actuator, remove the water pump (see Cooling, heating and air conditioning systems).

4. Remove the sensor harness bracket fasteners and re-position the bracket and harness (see illustration).

5. Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector.

6. Remove the CMP sensor from the front cover.

7. If reusing the old sensor, remove and discard the old CMP sensor 0-ring.

8. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be urea to use a new 0-ring, lubricate it with a film of clean engine oil, and tighten the CMP sensor bolt to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
