Parking brake — adjustment

1. Depress and release the parking brake three times.

2. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands, then remove the wheels. Release the parking brake.

3. Locate the parking brake cable equalizer adjusting nut along the outside of the left frame rail (see illustration). Loosen the adjusting nut until the parking brake cables are no longer under any tension.

4. Refer to Section Coil spring (rear) — removal and installation and adjust the parking brake shoes, then reinstall the brake discs and calipers.

5. Insert a piece of paper between the parking brake lever and the right-rear brake disc backing plate (see illustration).

6. Tighten the parking brake cable equalizer adjusting nut until the piece of paper falls out, then loosen the adjusting nut one turn.

7. Check the operation of the parking brake: When depressed with approximately 112-pounds of force, the pedal should travel 3 to 5 clicks. If it travels too far, tighten the adjusting nut until pedal travel is within the specified range. If it doesn’t travel far enough, loosen the nut until the travel is within the specified range.

8. Install the wheels and lug nuts, then lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts to the torque listed in the Tune-up and routine maintenance Specifications
