Power steering pump — removal and installation

Removal

1. Remove the drivebelt (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

2. Using a power steering pump pulley remover, remove the pulley from the pump (see illustration).

Note: The pulley removal tool is available at most automotive parts or tool supply stores as a rental tool.

3. Remove the oil pan skid plate or engine shield, if equipped.

4. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump. Disconnect the feed hose and the pressure line from the rear of the pump (see illustration). Disconnect the oil cooler hose from the pump, if equipped. Plug or cap all openings to prevent contaminants from entering any part of the system.

5. Remove the pump mounting fasteners (see illustration) and lift the pump from the vehicle, taking care not to spill fluid on the painted surfaces.

Installation

6. Position the pump in the mounting bracket and install the mounting fasteners; tighten them to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

7. Connect the pressure line and feed hose to the pump, making sure that all connections are secure.

8. Press the pulley onto the shaft using a pulley installer tool (see illustration).

23.8 Keep tightening the tool until the tool bottoms out against the pulley and pump shaft. It has to go on until the front of the pulley is flush with the pump shaft or the pulley will not line up with the rest of the belt -driven components

9. Install the drivebelt and engine shield (if equipped).

10. Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the system following the procedure described in the next section.
