Headliner — removal and installation
1. The models covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system components to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbags, which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).
Note: All models are equipped with two front airbags, formally known as the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. This system is designed to protect the driver and the front seat passenger from serious injury in the event of a frontal collision. It consists of an array of external and internal (inside the SDM) information sensors (decelerometers), the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), the inflator modules (a driver’s airbag in the steering wheel and a passenger’s airbag in the dash) and the wiring and connectors tying all these components together. An optional pair of side-impact airbags, also known as roof rail or side curtain airbags, is available for protection against side impacts. The side-impact airbags, if equipped, are located along the left and right edges of the headliner, above the doors.
2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems).
3. Remove the A pillar trim (see Dash trim panels and interior trim — removal and installation).
4. Remove the B pillar trim (see Dash trim panels and interior trim — removal and installation).
5. Remove the rear side trim panels (see Dash trim panels and interior trim — removal and installation).
6. Remove the sun visors (see Dash trim panels and interior trim — removal and installation).
7. Remove the roof rail assist handles by unscrewing the two fasteners that secure it to the roof.
8. Remove the overhead center console (if equipped) (see Dash trim panels and interior trim — removal and installation).
9. Remove the rear dome light fixture (if equipped).
10. Slide the front seats as far forward as possible and lean the seats back as far as possible.
11. Pull the door seal trim down from around the headliner area.
12. There are two retainer clips on the rear section of the headliner that help hold it up. It’s not necessary to remove them, but if needed, unscrew them and set aside for reinstalling.
13. Lower the headliner down and check for any wires that may have been glued to the back side. Pull them off and leave them in place. Disconnect any electrical connectors that lead to the dome light fixtures. The connectors are usually at the edge of the headliner.
14. With the aid of a helper guide the headliner out through a door. On the four-door models, use one of the rear doors.
15. Installation is the reverse of removal.
