Hood latch and release cable — removal and installation

Warning: The models covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system components to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbags, which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).

Latch

1. Remove the plastic panel over the radiator (see Radiator grille — removal and installation).

2. Follow the wiring harness from the latch to the electrical connector mounted nearby, then disconnect it (if applicable).

3. Mark the location of the hood latch with a scribe or suitable marking tool such as a permanent marker or paint.

4. Remove the mounting bolts and detach the latch assembly. Remove the cable from the latch (see illustration).

<p>5. Installation is the reverse of removal. If necessary, adjust the latch so the hood engages securely when closed and the hood bumpers are in their proper position.</p>

<p>6. Remove the latch and disconnect the release cable from the hood latch assembly.</p>
<p>7. Working in the passenger’s compartment, remove the driver’s kick panel to expose the hood latch release cable and handle.</p>
<p>8. Separate the cable end from the handle</p>
<p>and use pliers to release the cable housing end from the tab on the handle.</p>
<p><strong>Note: </strong><em>If the handle assembly must be replaced, remove its mounting bolt and detach it.</em></p>
<p>9. On truck models, the cable is routed behind the parking brake pedal assembly. Loosen the mounting fasteners to the parking brake pedal assembly enough to allow the cable to pull through behind it.</p>
<p>10. Working in the engine compartment, locate the cable grommet at the firewall and pull it away from the firewall along with the cable.</p>
<p>11. On some models the cable is held down in different spots with plastic clips. Detach the cable from the mounting points within the engine compartment (see illustration).</p>

12. Before pulling the cable from the passenger compartment tie a string or a piece of mechanic’s wire to the end of the cable.

13. Attach the string or mechanic’s wire onto the replacement cable and guide the cable through the firewall from the passenger compartment. Continue to guide the cable through the engine compartment until the grommet meets the firewall. Push the grommet into the hole in the firewall and seat it.

14. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
