Parking brake shoes — replacement
Warning: The dust created by the brake system is harmful to your health. An approved filtering mask should be worn when working on the brakes. Never blow the brake dust away with compressed air. Do not, under any circumstances, use petroleum-based solvents to clean brake parts. Use brake system cleaner only!
1. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Release the parking brake. Block the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling, then remove the rear wheels.
2. Remove the brake caliper (see Brake caliper — removal and installation), mounting bracket and the brake disc (see Brake disc — inspection, removal and installation).
3. Wash the brake assembly with brake system cleaner.
4. Remove the upper return spring (see illustration).
14.4 Grasp the spring with a pair of locking pliers and pull to detach the hooked ends
5. Hold the forward hold-down spring rod in place while applying pressure to the retaining spring. Twist the spring hold-down washer to release it (see illustration).
14.5 Turn the hold- down washer a 1/4 turn to remove it
6. Follow the same procedure for the rear hold-down spring.
7. Remove the parking brake shoes (see illustration).
14.7 Grasp the shoes from the top and tilt them away from the axle to remove
8. Twist the two brake shoes across each other to release the lower return spring and adjuster.
9. Before installing the new shoes, turn the adjuster screw star wheel in, then make sure the slots in the adjusting screw and the tappet are parallel with the backing plate.
10. To install the shoes, reverse the removal procedure. Make sure the ends of the shoes seat properly in the slots in the adjuster screw and tappet.
11. When installing the new shoes, turn the adjuster screw until the shoe lining just drags on the braking surface inside the disc. Then remove the disc and back-off the adjuster screw until the shoe lining doesn’t drag when the disc is installed and turned. The actual clearance between the lining surface of the shoe and the braking surface inside the disc should be 0.026-inch.
12. Installation is otherwise the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure to tighten the caliper bracket bolts and the caliper mounting bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications, and the wheel lug nuts to the torque listed in the Tune-up and routine maintenance Specifications.
13. Adjust the parking brake (see Parking brake — adjustment
