Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor — replacement

Warning: Wait until the engine is completely cool before beginning this procedure.

Note: On 6.0L models, the ECT sensor is located on the left cylinder head, in front of cylinder No. 1, just below the valve cover. On non-6.0L models, the ECT sensor is located to the right of the throttle body, next to the thermostat housing.

1. Drain the cooling system to a level that’s below the level of the ECT sensor (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

2. On non-6.0L models, remove the air intake duct (see Air intake duct and air filter housing — removal and installation).

3. On all models, disconnect the electrical connector from the ECT sensor (see illustrations).

4. Unscrew and remove the ECT sensor.

5. If you’re installing the old sensor, apply thread sealant to the threads. The threads of a new sensor should already be coated with sealant.

6. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the ECT sensor to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

7. Refill the cooling system (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
