Shift linkage (manual-shift models) — replacement and adjustment

Replacement

1. Place the transmission in Park and the transfer case shift lever in the 2WD High position.

2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Remove the transfer case skid plate, if equipped.

3. Remove the front driveshaft (see Driveshaft(s) — removal and installation).

4. Using a screwdriver or door panel removal tool, pry off the linkage from the ball pivots at each end of the shift linkage at the transfer case and the shift lever.

5. Remove the shift linkage from the vehicle.

Note: Before installing the linkage, loosen the adjusting bolt so it slides with slight resistance.

6. To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust the shift linkage as described in the next procedure.

Adjustment

7. Place the transmission in Park and the transfer case shift lever in the 2WD High position. Have an assistant hold the lever in the indicated position.

8. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands and remove the transfer case skid plate.

9. Loosen the adjustment bolt at the center of the shift linkage.

10. Make sure the ball sockets at each end of the shift linkage are securely seated on the ball pivots at the transfer case and the shift lever.

11. Verify that the transfer case range lever is in the 2WD High position.

12. Tighten the shift linkage adjustment bolt to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

13. Lower the vehicle and check the operation of the transfer case.
