Windshield wiper and washer system — component removal and installation
Windshield wiper motor
1. Pry off the windshield wiper trim caps (see illustration).
18.1 Pry open each trim cap, remove each wiper arm retaining nut and mark the relationship of each arm to its shaft, then remove the arms
2. Remove the windshield wiper retaining nuts and washers. Mark the position of each wiper arm in relation to its shaft, then remove the wiper arms.
3. Remove the cowl cover (see Body).
4. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor electrical connector.
5. Remove the three mounting bolts that secure the windshield wiper motor and linkage assembly to the cowl (see illustration).
18.5 To detach the windshield wiper motor and linkage assembly from the cowl, remove these three bolts
6. Lift the windshield wiper motor and linkage assembly out of the cowl area.
7. Pry the linkage off the wiper motor crank arm (see illustration).
18.7 Carefully pry the linkage arm loose from the crank arm
8. Remove the nut that attaches the actuator arm to the motor shaft (see illustration). Mark the relationship of the actuator arm to the motor shaft, then remove the actuator arm from the shaft.
18.8 Remove the crank arm nut, mark the relationship of the crank arm to the motor shaft, remove the crank arm, then remove the three motor mounting bolts
9. Remove the motor mounting screws and remove the motor.
10. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to align the marks you made on the actuator arm and the motor shaft, and on the windshield, wiper arms and the wiper arm shafts.\
Rear wiper motor (SUV models)
11. Remove the liftgate interior trim panel (see Body).
12. Remove the wiper arm. (Wiper arm removal is the same as the front wiper arms.)
13. Remove the wiper motor pivot shaft nut and washer, found below the wiper arm on the outside of the liftgate.
14. Remove the two retaining nuts securing the wiper motor to the lift gate.
15. Pull the wiper motor away from the lift gate and disconnect the electrical connector.
16. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the pivot nut to 80 in lbs.
Washer fluid reservoir
17. See Windshield washer fluid reservoir — removal and installation for the windshield washer fluid reservoir removal and installation procedure.
Washer fluid pump
18. Remove the washer fluid reservoir (see Body).
19. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the hose to the washer pump if you haven’t already. Then drain the reservoir.
20. Grasp the washer pump and pull straight out with a bit of a twisting motion (see illustration).
18.20 Pull the pump out with a slight twisting action
21. Most of the time the rubber grommet will pull out with the pump. With most replacement washer pumps a new grommet will come with it, however if needed, you can reuse the old one.
22. To install the pump, install the grommet first. Then, with a slight twisting motion push the pump back into the reservoir.
Tip: A bit of silicone spray lubricant will make the installation easier.
23. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal.
Windshield washer nozzle
24. Remove the cowl panel (see Body).
25. Twist the windshield washer hoses off of the nozzles.
26. Compress the locking tabs on each side of the nozzle and then push the nozzle out of the cowling.
27. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tip: Adjusting the nozzle can be accomplished with a sewing needle inserted into the spray tip of the nozzle. A slight movement of the nozzle can result in a great deal of spray pattern change on the windshield. With a few trial-and-error efforts you can get the spray exactly where you want it on the windshield.
Windshield wiper switch
28. The wiper switch is part of the multi-function switch mounted on the steering column. See Turn signal/hazard flasher/multi-function switch — replacement for the removal and installation procedure.
